Language situation and language politics in Iran

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a multi-ethnic country with one official and state language, Persian. The presentation aims at giving an overview of the complex linguistic situation in Iran, the position and function of language(s) in Iranian state ideology and state politics, and the various fields in which active language policies of the state are operating in Iran, affecting both the status and corpus of the languages spoken there. The presentation will concentrate on:

  • the renaming of place names after the Revolution of 1978/79
  • Language usage in administration and education
  • Terminology, or „Persianizing“ the vocabulary of Persian (by the National Language Academy)
